our difference

We don't ask you to take our word for it

Most dental visits end with a diagnosis you have to trust on faith. Someone looks in your mouth, tells you what they found, and you decide whether to believe them. That's not how this works here.

There's a microscope in every room. When we take a sample from your mouth, you watch the screen with us — at the same moment we do.

Did you know?

Because your mouth is the start of your health

Nobody gets strep throat and hears they weren't cleaning their throat well enough. Gum disease works the same way — and once you see it that way, the shame that keeps people out of the chair for years simply has nowhere to sit.

The old model

Bleeding gums = buildup

Buildup = a cleaning problem

A cleaning problem = your fault

The fix: scrape the surfaces smooth

What we know now

Bleeding gums = bacterial infection

The fix: target the organisms causing it

Bacteria you catch — from partners, parents, kids, pets

The message: you caught something. Let's treat it.

Dr. Joseph Denning

Picture your mouth as a forest.

It had a balanced ecology, everything living in harmony. Then an invasive species moves in. A nasty predator. It disrupts the whole biology. You don't sand the trees.

You go after the invader and let the system recover.

See for yourself

This is what getting healthy actually looks like

Because we can see your bacteria, we can also see them change. We take a slide at your first visit and another as treatment progresses. Side by side, the difference is unmistakable.

Sick Mouth

Healthy Mouth

A clear shift between the first slide and the second. What was active at the start settled into a much calmer, healthier picture by the end of treatment.

01

Sick Mouth

Healthy Mouth

This is our most advanced case, and the change is dramatic. Even at a later stage of disease, the bacterial picture improved substantially once treatment was underway.

02

Sick Mouth

Healthy Mouth

Six weeks apart. The difference between these two slides is significant, and it happened faster than most patients expect.

03

Experience the difference in one visit

01

Look at your own bacteria

A sample from your mouth goes under the microscope and onto the screen beside you, live. Most patients have never been shown anything about their own mouth beyond an X-ray, and the first look tends to be the moment the whole conversation changes.

02

Find out exactly what's there

Salivary DNA testing identifies the specific pathogens present, not just that something is wrong. Several of the organisms it screens for have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's — so the results tell you something about more than your gums.

03

Treat the infection, not the surface

Air polishing, laser therapy, and full-mouth disinfection go after the bacterial population itself. Nothing here depends on scraping your teeth smooth and hoping the inflammation follows.

04

Watch it change

A second slide comes later in treatment, and you see that one too. Progress gets confirmed on screen rather than assumed from the calendar.

Our team

Your care is in exceptionally capable hands

In most practices, hygiene is the appointment you have before the appointment that matters. Clean, check, schedule, leave. Ours are the center of the practice, and they use every bit of their training rather than a fraction of it.

What that means in your chair:

You get answers in the room, not a referral.

Your hygienist reads your slides herself, so when you ask what you're looking at or whether it's improving, the person holding the microscope is the one who can tell you.

One person, start to finish.

Air polishing and full mouth disinfection are performed by the same hygienist who assessed you, so nothing gets lost in a handoff and nobody has to be caught up on your history.

Laser certification across the team.

Every member of our hygiene staff is certified in laser bacterial reduction therapy, which is not standard training in most offices.

Improvement gets confirmed, not claimed.

Before you're told your mouth is healthier, a new sample is taken and read, so you leave knowing whether treatment worked rather than taking it on faith.

Have questions?We have answers.

Because gum disease is caused by specific bacteria, and until recently there was no practical way to see them during an appointment. The research connecting oral bacteria to inflammation has existed for over fifty years, but it lived in textbooks rather than in the operatory. What this changes for you is the amount of trust you have to extend. Instead of being told you have a problem and deciding whether to believe it, you look at the screen alongside your hygienist and see what's actually living in your mouth. Most patients tell us this is the first time a dental diagnosis made sense to them. It also means we can track whether treatment is working by taking a second sample rather than asking you to accept that it did.

The bacterial analysis itself is included in your visit, and for new patients the oral bacterial microscopic analysis and periodontal risk assessment are free. There's no charge to find out where you stand. If testing shows active disease, treatment costs more than a routine cleaning, because it's a different procedure using different tools. What it's designed to do is resolve the infection rather than manage it indefinitely, which for many patients means fewer ongoing interventions over time. You'll know the full cost before anything begins, and you're never obligated to proceed. Some patients choose to continue with traditional cleanings and work on their health independently, and we support that and keep monitoring alongside them.

This is the question we hear most, and the answer tends to be a relief. Gum disease is a bacterial infection, not a hygiene grade. The organisms responsible are most often transmitted by close contact, which means partners, parents, children, and pets. You can pick up an aggressive strain from someone you live with and develop disease despite excellent home care, in the same way you can catch strep throat without having done anything wrong. The older model treated bleeding gums as evidence of neglect, which is why so many people leave dental appointments feeling judged. Understanding this as an infection removes the blame entirely and points treatment at something you can actually act on.

For most anxious patients, easier. A significant part of dental fear is not knowing what's happening and expecting to be judged for whatever gets found. Seeing your own results, having them explained plainly, and being asked what you want to do about them tends to reduce that considerably. Our practice was built around patients with dental phobia and special needs, and that shapes everything from the room layout to how our team is hired. Laughing gas and oral conscious sedation are available whenever you want them, including for cleanings. You can bring someone with you, and there's a chair in every room for them. We'll go at whatever pace you set, and stopping to take a break is always an option.

What an amazing team at Lake Hill Dental! I couldn’t be happier with the care I received. Everyone treated me with genuine care, concern, and respect - not just as a patient, but as a person. Highly recommended!

Kim Frustere

I have major dental anxiety and was really nervous about going in, but this office was incredibly kind and caring from start to finish. They weren’t judgmental at all and took the time to explain everything step by step, which really helped calm me down. They listened to my concerns and made sure I felt comfortable the whole time. With a long road of dental work ahead, I’m so glad I was referred here and I finally feel comfortable going to the dentist.

Chelsea Rees

I have been a patient at Lake Hill Dental for several years and am so pleased with the care provided by the Dentists and the staff. For starters, the office is modern and very welcoming which is greatly appreciated.

Over the years, I have been impressed with the thoughtful care given by Dr. Johnstone and Dr. Denning. Recently, I had two experiences with Dr. Denning where he demonstrated both patience and kindness despite a very busy schedule and patient load. He listened to my concerns and responded to them thoughtfully.

I highly recommend Lake Hill Dental!
